Leaked documents belonging to the US National Security Agency show Israeli naval commandos assassinated a senior Syrian military official seven years ago. The NSA documents describe how Brigadier General Mahmoud Suleiman was shot dead near the northern Syrian port of Tartus in 2008. Suleiman was a close adviser to President Bashar al-Assad. The papers describe the assassination as QUOTE the first known instance of Israel targeting a legitimate Syrian government official. According to a secret cable released by WikiLeaks in 2010, the US Embassy in Damascus also said at the time that Tel Aviv was the most likely suspect behind the killing.
